The fortress "Festung Hohensalzburg" was built during the investiture controversy—the fierce conflict between the Pope and the King regarding the right to appoint bishops. The citadels Hohensalzburg, Friesach, and Hohenwerfen were constructed in 1077 to protect Gebhard, Archbishop of Salzburg, from the wrath of the King.
