Kotečnik (772 m) is a distinctive mountain ridge, approximately 1,800 metres long, stretching in an east–west direction and forming one of the most recognizable relief features above the valleys of Zabukovica and Liboje. Its northern slope rises steeply above the former coal‑mining area, where mining shaped the life and identity of the region for generations. Just above Liboje, on this northern slope, lies a small ski area that comes to life in winter.
The ridge has two more prominent summits, each offering a different experience. The eastern summit is overgrown and enclosed, providing no panoramic views but instead surrounding the visitor with the quiet intimacy of the forest. The western summit is its complete opposite: from there, a beautiful view opens toward the Posavsko Hills, with Šmohor and Gozdnik standing out, and toward the rolling landscape extending to the south.
Although Kotečnik is interesting for hikers, it is best known among sport climbers. On the southern slope, just below the ridge, stretches one of Slovenia’s most important climbing walls. The Kotečnik climbing area offers more than 330 routes, ranging in difficulty from 4b to 8c, making it a true magnet for climbers from Slovenia and abroad. The long, articulated wall provides exceptional variety—from easier, technically clean lines to demanding overhangs that challenge even the most experienced.
Kotečnik thus brings together natural beauty, cultural history, and sporting energy. It is a place where the calm of forest paths meets the vibrant pulse of climbing challenges, and one of those corners of Slovenia where the richness and diversity of the landscape are felt at every step.
