Veliki Zvoh (1971 m) is the highest peak of the Krvavec ski resort and a prominent point on the southern edge of the Kamnik–Savinja Alps. It stands on a panoramic ridge that descends northwards into the high‑mountain terrain between Vrh Korena and Kompotela, while to the south it drops steeply toward the Kokra Valley. Owing to its position, Veliki Zvoh is an important orientation point and one of the most recognisable silhouettes of the Krvavec area.
Geographical setting
Veliki Zvoh is located in the central part of Kržišče, a varied ridge landscape between Planina Jezerca and the saddle connecting Korenski vrh and Kompotela. Its position on the southern rim of the Kamnik–Savinja Alps offers exceptional views:
-
southwards across the Ljubljana Basin,
-
eastwards toward Velika planina and the Menina Plateau,
-
northwards to the central two‑thousand‑metre peaks of the Kamnik–Savinja Alps (Grintovec, Kočna, Skuta),
-
westwards to the Karavanke and the Julian Alps.
The ridge of Jež
Between Veliki Zvoh and Vrh Korena (1999 m) stretches the distinct ridge known as Jež, forming a natural connection between the two summits. The ridge is:
-
varied, with characteristic grassy and rocky sections,
-
partly exposed but easy to follow,
-
popular among hikers who combine the ascent of Zvoh with Vrh Korena.
Jež also serves as a transition between the ski area of Krvavec and the quieter high‑mountain slopes leading toward Kompotela and Mokrica.
Access
Veliki Zvoh can be reached by several routes:
-
From Krvavec (upper cable‑car station): the most common approach, about 1 hour of walking along marked paths or ski slopes.
-
From Planina Jezerca: a pleasant, scenic route that joins the ridge below the summit.
-
From Vrh Korena: a ridge traverse across Jež, suitable for more experienced hikers.
-
From the Kokra Valley: a longer and more demanding ascent via Planina Koren.
Krvavec ski resort
Veliki Zvoh is the highest point of the Krvavec ski resort, one of Slovenia’s most important winter sports centres. The Zvoh chairlift leads almost to the summit, and in winter the area is known for:
-
long, panoramic ski runs,
-
reliable snow conditions due to its elevation above 1900 m,
-
the scenic descent toward Jezerca,
-
outstanding views considered among the finest of any Slovenian ski resort.
In summer, Veliki Zvoh is a starting point for hiking, mountain biking, and exploring the ridge routes toward Korenski vrh, Kompotela, and Mokrica.
Experience and significance
Veliki Zvoh combines alpine character, easy accessibility, and remarkable panoramic value. It forms a meeting point between the tourist‑oriented Krvavec area and the quieter high‑mountain world of the Kamnik–Savinja Alps. Its location makes it ideal for:
-
scenic hikes,
-
ridge traverses,
-
photography,
-
exploring the geology and relief of the southern Alpine edge.
