Azay-le-Rideau is situated on a picturesque natural islet in the middle of the Indre River. This architectural gem is widely considered one of the foremost and most elegant masterpieces of early French Renaissance layout anywhere in the Loire Valley region.
The monumental palace was commissioned by Gilles Berthelot, the influential Treasurer of King François I, and his wife Philippa Lesbahy. Construction works took place during the rich Renaissance campaign between 1518 and 1527. The structure seamlessly blends defensive elements of traditional medieval fortresses with the symmetry, geometric grace, and decorative flourish of Italian Renaissance design. Its foundations rise directly out of the water line, creating an unforgettable mirror illusion of the majestic chateau within the slow currents of the Indre River.
