Cascade de Piscia di Ghjaddu (often also called Piscia di Gallu) is one of the most striking natural landmarks in the interior of southern Corsica. This waterfall, which plunges roughly 50 metres in a free fall, is set in the heart of the granite massif of l’Ospédale, about one kilometre from the dam and artificial reservoir, at an elevation of around 900 metres. Its position on the edge of a rocky escarpment creates a dramatic scene, especially in spring or after periods of heavy rain when the water flow is at its strongest.
Access and the panoramic road
The trailhead is reached by driving from Porto-Vecchio towards Palavesa and then continuing towards the mountain village of L’Ospedale. This is one of the most beautiful panoramic roads in the region: over the course of about 22 kilometres it climbs from the sea level into the cooler mountain environment, where pine forests and granite boulders open up wide views of the entire eastern coast of Corsica, the bay of Porto-Vecchio, and the distant ridges of the Alta Rocca. The hiking path begins near a small inn with a designated parking area, though visitors may also park along the roadside at marked spots.
Hiking trail and safety
The first part of the trail is wide, well-trodden, and suitable for most visitors. It initially leads through a shaded forest with clear markings and a gentle gradient. After roughly twenty minutes, the forest thins out and the path opens onto rocky slopes, offering beautiful panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, the l’Ospédale lake, and the distant coastline.
The final section is considerably more demanding. Just before the viewpoint and the descent towards the plunge pool, the terrain becomes steep and exposed, with slippery rock surfaces. This part of the trail is equipped with a sturdy steel cable that provides secure handholds and stability. Even so, caution is essential, as the rock is often wet from spray. It is not advisable to descend into the plunge pool without proper hiking footwear, as the rocks there are extremely slick and exposed.
Walking time and recommendations
From the parking area to the viewpoint above the waterfall, the descent takes about 40 minutes at a moderate pace. The return trip is noticeably more strenuous, requiring roughly one hour of uphill walking. The trail is most enjoyable in the morning, when the light is soft, temperatures are pleasant, and the waterfall often carries more water. Visitors are advised to bring sufficient water, sun protection, and footwear with good grip.
