"Nearby the town Bovec is a skiing centre where, during winter time and with sufficient snowfall, a high-mountain ski resort is arranged. Skiing is possible on groomed slopes from an altitude of 2300 m. From the ski slopes, a panoramic view opens up towards Bovec and the Julian Alps.
Ski resort info: altitude 1650-2300 m, area of groomed slopes: 30 ha."
This was written in January 2004... much has changed since then. As of 2013, Slovenia's highest ski resort has been closed following an accident where the cableway mechanism was damaged on tower 17 of the circular cabin cableway. Two gondolas fell, and two were stranded... there were no funds for repairs.
The circular cabin cableway from Bovec to the Kanin ski resort was built in 1973 and was fully renovated between 1999 and 2001.
Bankruptcy proceedings for the company ATC Kanin began on June 26, 2013. Fixing the technical issues would have cost "only" 50,000 euros, but the company failed to secure financial resources from its owners (Euroinvest, Municipality of Bovec, Hit). Extreme mountain conditions quickly affected the infrastructure, which is now rapidly deteriorating.
